Is Your Sport becoming frustrating because of pain or stiffness?

From muscle strains and ligament injuries to persistent knee, shoulder or back pain — our sports physiotherapists help identify the root cause and get you moving confidently again.

Why Sports Injuries Keep Coming Back

Sports injuries often seem to improve with rest, only to return again once training or activity resumes. In many cases, the pain itself is not the real problem — the underlying issue may still be there. Weakness, reduced mobility, poor movement patterns and incomplete rehabilitation can all place extra stress on the body, increasing the risk of re-injury. Without properly addressing the root cause, the body simply continues to compensate during movement, leading to recurring pain and frustration.

Studies show recurrent injuries account for between 5% and 21% of all sports injuries,

often due to incomplete rehabilitation or returning too soon.

Common Reasons Sports Injuries Keep Returning

  • Returning to sport or training too early

  • Weakness after injury or time off

  • Poor movement patterns or compensation

  • Reduced mobility or flexibility

  • Overloading tissues before they are fully recovered

A word from

Ross Cairns

Senior Physiotherapist

"In general, we can say that sports and exersize injuries fall into two catergories:

Overuse injuries and Traumatic injuries.

overuse injuries occur when we over stress the tissues and don't allow enough time for recovery. This can be due to doing too much exercise in a short period of time or doing exercise in the wrong way.

There are many things you can do to prevent these injuries, but you must also 'listen' to your body and recognize the signs that you've overdone it."

Frequently asked Questions

How soon should I see a physio after a sports injury?

The earlier you seek advice, the better. Early assessment can help reduce pain, prevent compensation patterns, and speed up recovery.

Do I need a scan before physiotherapy?

In many cases, no. Physiotherapists can assess and treat most sports injuries without imaging, although we may recommend further investigation if needed.

Can physiotherapy help old sports injuries?

Yes. Many long-standing injuries improve significantly with the right rehabilitation programme and movement correction.

Should I stop training completely after an injury?

Not always. Complete rest can sometimes slow recovery down. In many cases, modifying training and following the right rehab plan is the best approach to keep you progressing safely.

Can physiotherapy improve sports performance as well as recovery?

Yes. Alongside injury treatment, physiotherapy can improve mobility, strength, stability, and movement efficiency to help reduce injury risk and improve performance.
